Comments on Blog - Are They Required

I get a lot of comments on my blogs but they are generally just comments to create backlinks to other often non related sites.
Is it necessary to enable comments? Is it best to allow them all - its time consuming to keep moderating them, set it up as no follow or not allow comments at all?
Could you please advise the best way to deal with them
Thanks

Hi Sally.<div><br /></div><div>This is largely based on your preferences, and your intentions for the site. If you are running your site as a "blog," meaning you intend to encourage participation and foster a sense of community for your readers, you obviously would not want to disable comments, so setting your comment links to nofollow would be an option.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you are using the site as a source of backlinks, disabling comments would be a better choice, as high numbers of outbound links can reduce the worth your site can pass in an external link, even with the nofollow attribute set.</div><div><br /></div><div>Personally I find with most of my sites that I leave comments enabled and moderated, and rarely check them. On rare occassions I spot a legitimate comment, approve and reply to it, but for the most part it's not on my mind. This works for me because of the particular way in which I am using my sites, which is more towards WordPress as an SEO friendly CMS than a blogging platform.</div><div><br /></div><div>I hope this helps you make your choice, and if you need any further help feel free to submit a ticket straight to the helpdesk. Be sure not to include sensitive data in this ticket as all replies are connected back to your post on the message board.</div><div><br />Thanks.</div><br /><br />Brian Zeligson<br /> Customer Support Representative<br /> WPDirect.com<br />
