How many keywords should I have?

Keywords are used to calculate the search engine ranking position (SERP) of your website. We recommend having 3-5 high quality keywords that each get between 5,000-30,000 searches a month.
Keyword research and selection is one of the most important aspects of the "long-tail" SEO strategy WPD is designed for. For more information, please see Day 2 of the Thity Day Challenge: http://www.thirtydaychallenge.com/training/2009day02.php

Is that per Category...per site...or per post?

Pupster-
That is 3-5 unique keywords per site. Each keyword should have its own category, as well.

ok..........
I was thinking of structuring my blog with @25 articles that would be single pages targeting specific keywords, 1 main keyword per article with other long tails sprinkled in each article.
But you are saying no more than 5 Categories w/ 5 kw's.
If I structure and target the blog with the 25 articles....I'm thinking I would be setting this up as either as category pages or just single pages with auto-content posted underneath these main articles.
So why wouldn't this work and why is it advised against.
This offers me more leverage I would think.
I was also curious to know if it is possible to make these primary articles sticky so that they stay at the top of the page through the use of a plugin, and then use the auto-content tools to provide me with the additional content below these articles for the fresh content on a weekly basis.
Thoughts anyone? ........ is there a plugin to make the article sticky for permanent top positioning and then add to the pages or categories below that.
Thanks

Under Manage My Sites, go to Manage Posts. Click on the "Make it Sticky" option and that article will always be at the top.

Pupster,
Even if each keyword has its own page, Google will view your site as a whole. You're better off having 25 sites from an SEO standpoint. Do 3 variations on each keyword for each site for best results.

Pupster,
I also would like to add that keyword selection is probably the most important aspect of getting well-ranked after you get indexed. For this purpose, we strongly recommend Market Samurai. You can sign up for a free trial at marketsamurai.com

you recommend marketsamurai, but what about keyword elite 2.0?

The number of keywords you use is determined by the purpose of the site.
If , for example you are building a network of feeder sites then you should have no more than 3-5 as stated above. If you are building an authority site then you can have as many keywords as you can manage. ( Once you get above 20 or so terms it gets really hairy and you'll need a system or a team )
I know of people who have 19 categories and 120 plus keywords assigned to one site, but they are using automation and outsourcing.
Like I say it depends on what you want your site to do.
If you need any help just shout../ post here
