What are the pinging settings and where can I change them? Is Pinging Done Automatically? How can pinging get my site indexed faster?

Pinging is done automatically and can be controlled using the pinglist in wp-admin.
You can find it under Settings >> Writing.
Scroll to the bottom where it says 'Update Services.'
It is pre-configured for maximum SEO benefit and a new article is typically indexed in under 20 minutes because of it. However, pingbacks are disabled by default to reduce spam on the blog.
